Glass, Stationery Office, The , , , And like all good literature, this novel reaches beyond the moment to encompass larger themes: for its protagonist, Karl the small, is not only struggling with an emerging schizophrenia that increasingly boulders his life with unexpected moments of delusion, but he is also dealing with the emerging tugs of adulthood.

Karl's offbeat humor works for a while to stave the problems, and indeed, his humor gives the reader a great many insights into the ludicrous machinations of the business world and the Mormon society that surrounds Karl in his home state. But then quips, puns, and humor turn sour as Karl is subjected to psychotic episode after psychotic episode until the resulting break with reality becomes catastrophic. But then a peace emerges at the end of this novel to save Karl from complete tragedy, to indeed leave him as an operating, normal human -- albeit our concept of normality has certainly been enhanced by the novel's end.

Pensees, Blaise Pascal , , , Blaise Pascal, the precociously brilliant contemporary of Descartes, was a gifted mathematician and physicist, but it is his unfinished apologia for the Christian religion upon which his reputation now rests. Mankind emerges from Pascal's analysis as a wretched and desolate creature within an impersonal universe, but who can be transformed through faith in God's grace. Take It Or - Leave It! Revoked by S. Smith , , , The Encyclopedia of Women in World History captures the experiences of women throughout world history in a comprehensive, 4-volume work. Although there has been extensive research on women in history by region, no text or reference work has comprehensively covered the role women have played throughout world history. The past thirty years have seen an explosion of research and effort to present the experiences and contributions of women not only in the Western world but across the globe.

Historians have investigated womens daily lives in virtually every region and have researched the leadership roles women have filled across time and region. They have found and demonstrated that there is virtually no historical, social, or demographic change in which women have not been involved and by which their lives have not been affected. The Oxford Encyclopedia of Women in World History benefits greatly from these efforts and experiences, and illuminates how women worldwide have influenced and been influenced by these historical, social, and demographic changes.

The Encyclopedia contains over 1, signed articles arranged in an A-Z format for ease of use. The entries cover six main areas: biographies; geography and history; comparative culture and society, including adoption, abortion, performing arts; organizations and movements, such as the Egyptian Uprising, and the Paris Commune; womens and gender studies; and topics in world history that include slave trade, globalization, and disease.

With its rich and insightful entries by leading scholars and experts, this reference work is sure to be a valued, go-to resource for scholars, college and high school students, and general readers alike. Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food , , X, Dispersed Democratic Leadership examines both the scope and consequences of the dispersal of the leadership role in democratic societies, a topic that has been relatively neglected by a political science literature dominated by studies of executive power. Individual chapters investigate the many loci of leadership found in modern democracies, some ancient and some newly emergent, some institutionalized and some ad-hoc, some self- consciously political and some avowedly a-political.

Featured Posts

In assessing the effects of leadership dispersal, the book argues that understanding how policies are shaped in a democracy requires balancing the usual person-centered approach with one that is more contextual, institutional, and relational. The public leadership role of people in business, the media, non- governmental organizations, bureaucracy, law, show-business and many other areas are instructively investigated to enhance our appreciation of the complexity of democratic political systems and to allow us to assess the effects, both good and ill, of democratic leadership dispersal.

The Gospel Within Us brings you on a complete verse by verse tour of The Gospel According to Mark and shows how this first Gospel can be seen as a workbook that provides a complete program of spiritual learning and growth, from the first stirrings of conscience to the final transformation, as Christ within us guides us into a life led by The Holy Spirit. One of the exceptional beauties of this book is that it allows all, not just Christians, to get a taste of our true, spiritual selves. These operate in gas condensations in the vicinity of the mysterious star Eta Carinae one of the most luminous and massive stars of our Galaxy. Both maser and laser effects, first demonstrated under laboratory conditions, have now been discovered to occur under natural conditions in space too. This is the official text for the National Association of Science Writers.

In the eight years since the publication of the first edition of A Field Guide for Science Writing, much about the world has changed. Never has it been more crucial for the lay public to be scientifically literate. That's where science writers come in. And that's why it's time for an update to the Field Guide, already a staple of science writing graduate programs across the country. The academic community has recently recognized how important it is for writers to become more sophisticated, knowledgeable, and skeptical about what they write.

More than 50 institutions now offer training in science writing. In addition mid-career fellowships for science writers are growing, giving journalists the chance to return to major universities for specialized training. We applaud these developments, and hope to be part of them with this new edition of the Field Guide.

In A Field Guide for Science Writers, 2nd Edition, the editors have assembled contributions from a collections of experienced journalists who are every bit as stellar as the group that contributed to the first edition. In the end, what we have are essays written by the very best in the science writing profession. These wonderful writers have written not only about style, but about content, too. These leaders in the profession describe how they work their way through the information glut to find the gems worth writing about. We also have chapters that provide the tools every good science writer needs: how to use statistics, how to weigh the merits of conflicting studies in scientific literature, how to report about risk.

And, ultimately, how to write. Quotz, Lisa K. It is to introvertsRosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniakthat we owe many of the great contributions to society. In Quiet, Susan Cain argues that we dramatically undervalue introverts and shows how much we lose in doing so.

She charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal throughout the twentieth century and explores how deeply it has come to permeate our culture. She also introduces us to successful introvertsfrom a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions.

The view that Russia has taken a decisive shift towards authoritarianism may be premature, but there is no doubt that its democracy is in crisis. In this original and dynamic analysis of the fundamental processes shaping contemporary Russian politics, Richard Sakwa applies a new model based on the concept of Russia as a dual state.

Russia's constitutional state is challenged by an administrative regime that subverts the rule of law and genuine electoral competitiveness. This has created a situation of permanent stalemate: the country is unable to move towards genuine pluralist democracy but, equally, its shift towards full-scale authoritarianism is inhibited.

I was so intrigued by the story, that I reached out to Noire and asked her if she would be willing to do an interview. She graciously accepted. I think you will find her interview an absolute delight, and if you loved her before, I promise you, you will love her even more. I have a great deal of respect and admiration for her as a woman and as an artist.

She is someone who has overcome so much adversity in her life. She is an inspiration to me. It is with great pleasure that I introduce to you, Noire. My mother had a lot of substance abuse issues, so as kids we were exposed to a lot of drama. I grew up around drugs and crime, and when I was young I looked up to pretty girls who were getting caught up in that lifestyle. I give a lot of thanks to my aunts because they loved us enough to step in and rescue us from my mother.

They placed us in a more positive environment. I started writing when I was a little girl, probably about six or seven, but I hid my stories because I was scared all the time. As I got older and matured, my writing matured too. When I was fourteen, my next-door neighbor bought me a five-subject notebook for school, and I filled it up by writing fantasies and mysteries. I also wrote a few comedies so I could make myself laugh. There was one time that my aunt found something that I had written and hidden in the back of a drawer.

She read it with her mouth hanging open. It was a short story that I had written just for myself as usual, but my aunt is a writer too and she convinced me that the rest of the world needed to read my stories. Her encouragement was life-changing for me. It was all original, and all at my own pace. It had to be studying people and their conversations that shaped me. I watched and listened to everything, even when it got me in trouble. And I read everything I could get my hands on too, including the newspaper.

I went from admiring the so-called chickenheads, thots, and trap queens, to mentoring and counseling them and showing them that they have options and alternatives in life. My stories are basically big blinking warning signs. I do my best writing at night. I work all day and I stay up late writing. I always hear them. I have a job, so I work and put in my eight hours, and when I get off I take care of bizz on the home-front.

I write at night for relaxation and because creating believable characters comes easy to me. My mother, as deep as she was in her addiction, she had a love for books too, and that was one of the good things that she passed on to me. When I was growing up reading was my only escape from my reality.

My mother actually eased up and let me be when she saw me reading. Maybe she respected the connection I had with words, who knows. I mean I just I ate up anything that had words printed on it. Words were sexy and attractive to my eyes. There are just too many to name. But I like literary fiction, mysteries, and the classics best of all.

If so, how did you deal with it? I struggled a lot early on because I was sneaking and writing and hiding everything I wrote. There was nothing on the shelves like G-Spot back in when it was published. G-Spot became an instant classic, and although you can find a lot of knock-off copycat stories based on G and Juicy today, back then they were original and unique characters and nobody had ever written a story anything like it before. Prayer and laughter! I pray a lot and I laugh a lot.

I believe in the power of the universe. I try to treat people the right way and I surround myself with positive people who are going in my direction. Everybody else gets a smile and a wave as I pass them by. Being rescued from my mother and taken in by my aunts. Too many things to list! But then again, maybe nothing. All of my mistakes have become life experiences, and I value each and every one of them. No, because I never set out to share my writing with the world. I think the powerful relationships that I build with other women, and the mentoring I do to help children and teenagers are more important than anything else.

I want them to recognize the quality writing, the detailed plots, the 3D characters, and the human emotions that my pen game invokes. By children! By laughter! And definitely by sex! My dream is to see young people, especially young ladies, embrace their power and strive for what they want in this world.

I envision a world where my child can dare to dream and to create her own prosperity and happiness, regardless of what it is. I love moving my body and I find my hips and abs very sensual. I think good writing is careful writing. You perfect it by understanding the written language, developing your skills, studying the craft, understanding the concepts of literature, and being able to lay out a plot in a rational and believable manner.

In short, you write with skill, but you write from your gut. I think books should have to be sold without a cover. I mean, sexy chicks, urban scenery, slick fonts, bold colors, the whole nine. A misspelling every other word, a plot that makes no damn sense, or something that has already been written thirty other times in a hundred other books.

Or, characters who all sound and act alike, and no real story being told at all. Just a bunch of drawn-out scenes with nothing happening. Let the book stand on that! I like plotting. I have a good feel for it. I like constructing plot twists that look like pretzels. They sure do. I grew up around a few girls just like Juicy and I decided I wanted to tell their stories. I started writing G-Spot after I witnessed something foul going down with a young girl who was close to me. So I wrote her story and let her read it. It opened her eyes and blew her mind. You can only fool people until they get up on you.
