Puzzled sometimes, like the time when I tried to trick him and hid the frisbee under my jumper. He looked at me and tipped his head from one side to the other. I laughed at him, so he grabbed the frisbee and ran away with it. He hid the frisbee in the garden and came back to me with a wicked gleam in his eye. Then I had to go and search for it. Axle loved the finding game.
He led me in, under the bushes and around behind the garage, darted off one way then changed his mind. He danced all around me. Mum looked hard at me, then at her brother. Anyway, I reckon Axle tried to get back across the flooded river with them that night and It had been six months since Axle disappeared.
First thing that morning, Uncle Ian had let all three dogs out of their pen to go for a run, as usual. Although Axle slept in the house at our place in the city, there were different rules when we stayed at Eden Glassie. He spent his days exploring the vineyard, the river banks and the State Forest which adjoined the property on the south side. By evening he was tired and happy to share the outside kennel with Hunter and Oliver. In the morning, Axle would come bouncing out with them, ready for anything again.
In a couple of hours the two retrievers would arrive back, their pale gold coats wet and muddy or full of dust and burrs.
Axle would come later, his tail waving happily and a gleam of excitement in his soft, brown eyes. While we were all in the kitchen eating breakfast, chatting and planning our day, the river, swelled by water from the lakes upstream, spilled silently out over its banks. It covered the land on either side, swallowing it up in great gulps, leaving nothing but a huge, brown lake.
We rushed to the door and looked out. Thirty-four hectares of pasture and vineyard had disappeared under a sea of water. This action might not be possible to undo.
