Mrs Gregory focused primarily on defences to murder and how Anu Singh was able to have her murder charge reduced to manslaughter through the use of the defence of diminished responsibility. We learnt how Singh's defence team was able prove this defence successfully during the court process.
This encourages us to question whether justice was truly achieved or could have ever been achieved for the victims. Senior English student are studying Helen Garner's novel from an analytical perspective, dissecting Garner's views on the case.
The most important part of the novel is the trial of Anu Singh how she murdered Joe Cinque and how she only ended up going to jail for four years non-parole. It was interesting to hear a legal approach to the case and explore objectivity or lack thereof in literature against this legal background.
