This is a quirky little book that provides us with glimpses of the thoughts of Alfred Brendel the performer. It's as if someone had asked him, "Mr Brendel, what's your opinion on X", and he took a couple of minutes to answer it and many others like it. And thus we have in alphabetical order, with no letter left behind, a line up of topics about each of which he has something to say or not.

That last one in particular is a "zinger". Naturally, the number of entries per let This is a quirky little book that provides us with glimpses of the thoughts of Alfred Brendel the performer. Naturally, the number of entries per letter are not evenly distributed, so some letters get only one entry. And each entry is anywhere from a sentence to two pages long. That said, one must understand that the brevity belies decades of performance, study and analysis; from Bach to Nancarrow and much in between.
Of course that's not to say one must agree with every word of it. Most of what's written will be appreciated by those who can play the piano duh! There's quite a bit of the latter, and it's all delivered with dry humour.
Being able properly to read, and grasp, the written text of a composition ranks among the performer's supreme skills. Even then, there are a few interesting things to read for the curious music listener who has only a superficial understanding of the terms, like yours truly. It shares some of the wisdom of a supremely experienced and consummate musician, and is written with humour and intelligence. Some unexpected definitions bring a smile.
